Negative size with medium format make
it better than any 35mm system under
favorable conditions. When working
under tight timelines, medium format cameras are slower to use
than 35mm. They also need to be steadier due to greater internal
vibration caused by the large mirror moving up and down with
each shot. Larger negative size means larger lens diameter, which
makes you generally more prone to flare problems. Our Mamiya
system is better in that dept. than our Hasselblad system. A
steady tripod and carefully selected shooting angle can cure
these problems, but when time is tight, shooting conditions are
a bit precarious and sun angle is not very satisfactory in relation
to your desired shooting angle, medium format can produce a large
negative with image quality that is less than what can be had
with a 35mm system. The smooth action of a 35mm mirror system
makes it much better to shoot hand held, especially from precarious
outdoor locations in Hawaii, because the vibration is so much
less, and the camera is much lighter. The negative size is of
course smaller, but it is better to have a high quality image
on a small negative vs a bad image on a huge negative. We achieve
excellent results most of the time with our medium format gear,
but it is slower to work with, and is not as consistent when
shooting hand held from precarious locations. We do that very
often because we are location specialists, and encounter unstable
conditions routinely, and often times considerable wind to boot!
This is what prompted us to research the German Leica 35mm system,
which is light in weight, smooth and almost vibration free, and
offering unquestionably the very finest 35mm Zeiss optics made.
The contrast and color saturation/ color characteristics are
absolutely superb. Their lenses are rated the highest in resolution
of any lenses. Leica engineering is without peer. We felt that
it was worth the considerable expense because we desired a lighter
and smoother, high quality camera system for shooting outdoors
in Hawaii where conditions are challenging to say the least.
We stand by our Hasselblad and Mamiya medium format systems,
